Through this the target audience may assume that the artist is very successful and popular artist due to the high demand for the artist. Conforming to mainstream ideologies and in turn, found more appealing by the mass audience.
Analyse the following magazine advert. Ensure that your analysis is detailed and that you have included excellent examples to support the points that you have made. Also relate back to the music conventions and the target audience.

Representation of music artist

The artist representation taken from this particular advert conforms to the conventions of the deep house genre, artist as a result of many contributing attributes. One being the appearance of the artist. Guetta is seen in clothing which the target audience can relate to. This is seen in the casual T-shirt work by the artist who is sold in many high street stores. Through the use of dyers theory the artist is seen as ordinary, which allows the audience to relate with the artist.

The choice of background contributes to the typical deep house artist representation; the use of a summer abroad destination seen by the deck chairs and the palm trees. This connotes a party destination places a place deemed to have parties like many summer festival or holidays, this is highlighted by the bold white statement “the must check out party” illustrating the party theme. It is clear that the artist is passing the theme of fun on the audience. Locations deemed both fun and a place to party. Furthermore, Dyers theory shows the artist as being the star with the headlines “nobody does it guetta” showing the artist is like no other and no other can compare. Illustrating to the audience he is the best which therefore persuades the audience to watch him at his wmc special. The tour destination “Miami wmc special show the artist is seen as a star around the world. Therefore improving the artist representation.

Connotations of the advert

The advert appears to have an evident persuasive motif, connoting the natural world such as the sea, sky, trees. It is very conventional for deep house artists to focus on nature in their visual representations as it portrays them as more down to earth and therefore the target audience will find them more appealing as they feel they are easy to relate to. This representation is also relevant in regards to the other colors used in the advert; green connoting grass, trees etc and yellow also connoting sunlight, sand etc. Therefore this representation of the artist being down to earth through the natural motif highlighting a relatable artist which the public can relate to.

Design/layout

In consideration of the size of the advert itself, the image of the artist is relatively large and takes up a large amount of the area. This allows the audience to focus on the artist’s appearance and style, giving them something to take/maintain an interest in. For example, what clothes he is wearing in order for them to purchase/adopt a similar style so that they feel similar to the artist. This will help to evoke dyers theory showing the artist as a star as the target audience will copy his style sense and look up to the artist. Similarly, the artist's name is also very large in a contrasting colour and font in the advert, emphasising to the audience the artist’s name. Through the use of the contrasting font and colour allows the advert to be eye catching so the audience, as the large name will create awareness as it is easily visible. With both aspects of the poster being large, this makes the aim of the advert very clear to the audience as they quickly become aware of whom the advert is about (David Guetta). The large proportions of each aspect are engaging also as they are attention grabbing whereas small proportionate aspects become hard to see and therefore unrecognisable to a potential target audience. Furthermore, contrasting to normal conventions of the deep house/ dance genre Guetta subverts by having additional and unnecessary information on the advert. This will engage the audience telling them both facts which are vital and persuading them on the artist. This will increase the artists fan base, popularity and success. Name, what the artist looks like, their tour dates would be examples of facts and “Nobody does it like Guetta”, would be examples of persuasive information. This will intern persuade and inform the artist boosting their success and increasing their audience.

Choice of images

there are two main images in the advert; the artist (David Guetta) and the background, creating a very simplistic advert as a whole. The lack of visual variation limit a possible over-crowding effect, which may appeal to the target audience of a pop artist, however less likely in term of an Deep house/ Dance artist, as they appear simple and focused on their music rather than their image; Seen from the simplistic clothing. The background sunny location seen through the deck chairs and palm trees, again simple as the target audience relate this will fun and dancing which the artist implies through his music.

Typography

The font used to write the artist's name, is always used on any product in which the artist's name features in i.e. adverts, album covers, artist website. Therefore, this begins to build an image of the artist as the consistency of this particular font allows the audience to associate such font with the artist, therefore creating increased awareness of her. Also, the artists name is very large in size, letting the audience know straight away that the advert is about them. In addition the name is in a contrasting colour also highlighting the artist; this is engaging regardless if the audience has heard of her or not as they are immediately drawn to her name as a result of the size of the font and colour. Furthermore, the tour dates are all in capital letters to emphasise to the audience that he is on tour and when she is performing. It encourages the target audience to purchase tickets. In addition to this it highlights the artist’s success increasing his image as a star.

The magazine advert shown above by avicii, includes vital information that is required in order for the advert to be successful including tour dates and album releases. “3 June Dublin o2”. This will inform the target audience when the artist is playing and to pre book tickets for this date. This will promote the artist and present their image to the audience, creating awareness and increasing sales. It is crucial for the advert to give the right impression to its audience and present the correct artist image in order to attract the correct target market. Conventions of the dance genre are seen in the. Avicii's magazine advert. This is illustrated through the use of hiding his identity. This is achieved by his back facing the camera in the main image. This will create a mystery identity to his target audience. This follows the conventions of the genre as deep house/ dance genre as they focus on their music rather than the image created of themselves. By hiding the artist identity it allows him to portray the feeling on the audience, therefore increasing the artist success. Although the artist identity is hidden it allows the audience to focus on the crowd behind him. Which gives the impression that he has a large fan base as there is a vast amount of people in the image enjoying his music? This will therefore boost the artist success as the audience will see the artist success and the people enjoying the music, the audience will also want to have this feeling by joining the artist fan base, boosting his success. The feeling of enjoyment is also highlighted through the artist’s body language. This is seen in the image as the artist holds he hand in the air which suggests that he is enjoying what he is doing and continues the impression that everyone is having a good time, which will be passed on to the target audience promoting the artists success. In addition to portraying a fun environment the artist also highlights he is star and a success. This is seen through his popularity and through is large fan base seen in the background of the image. This will evoke the feeling that the artist creates good music as he hides his identity and has a large fan base, which will further entice potential customers to buy his album. This supports Dyers theory as he believes that the star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer. Avicii in this advert is absent through his masked identity but present through his large following and body language. This will therefore increase the artist success as it will persuade to follow the artist and buy albums.

Avicii is also in casual clothing, making his audience able to relate to him more easily as he is wearing normal clothes, which is commonly worn by his fan base. This supports Dyers theory that artists must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer. The checked jumper that Avicii is wearing would be considered as being ordinary as it is clothing that his target audience are familiar with and would perhaps wear themselves. This will enable Avicii to build a relationship with his audience and therefore lead to creating loyal customers. On the other hand the artists are seen as extraordinary through the huge crowd that has gathered to hear his music. The image as a whole presents Avicii as being fun and carefree which are often traits found in artists belonging to the dance genre and therefore appeal to the specific audience of dance music. This will therefore achieve the main purpose of the magazine advert which is to sell tour tickets and increase the awareness of Avicii as an artist as these aspects would all persuade the intended target market to purchase Avicii's products etc. that are being promoted by the advert.

Colour connotation in the magazine also helps to boast the artist’s success. Through the use of sutel blue tones are used throughout the advert in the form of the banners held by onlookers, the checked shirt that Avicii is wearing, fading into the colour of the sky. This allows the main headline of 'Avicii - Part of the At Night Family' to stand out in a bright white colour - grabbing the attention of anyone who comes across it. The bold font and white glowed colouring helps to attract the audience. This highlights the artist trying to increase his fan base as he aims to gain more followers.

The dark colours used for the DJ decks at the bottom of the advert allow the dates and venues along with other important information to be more visible for onlookers. This is through the use of white writing which stands out more on the black background. There is little information present on the advert which allows it to remain uncomplicated and easier to read, meaning that readers are not overwhelmed by useless information.

it is clear from the two adverts what is needed to create a successful deep house advert. the secondary reseach will help myself and my group 0.

  1. Your analysis of the two magazine adverts demonstrates a proficient understanding of the codes and conventions. You have analysed the main points well and you have started to consider some of the dance conventions. However, this needs to be explored and discussed in further detail.

You also need to include a summary, to explain how your research will assist you with planning and creating your own magazine advert.
