Research into Chosen Artist

Research into chosen artist

We have chosen to create a music video for the song 'Sun Don't Shine' by the Austrian dance pairing Tobias Rieser and Adrian Held who form the group Klangkarussell. They are danceelectronic producers formed in 2011 and have recently become very successful in the music charts. We have chosen the group Klangkarussel because they have recently breakthrough into the UK charts with the song “Sun Don’t Shine” which has reached the Top 10 in 6 countries AustriaBelgiumGermanyNetherlands, United Kingdom and Switzerland. Another reason for this choice is the fact that they are a new and fresh artist that is gaining significant recognition in the music industry. They have only recently became recognisable from the song that we have chosen to create a music video for the “Sun Don’t Shine” however since there first release they have released a number of new songs which are currently gaining success in the charts. Their new song is widely recognised and therefore a larger audience will be attracted to it and enjoy it.

In June 2013 the duo released their debut single "Sonnentanz" the Austrian word for ‘sun don’t shine’, the song has peaked to number 3 in Austria, number 3 in Belgium,  number 4 in Germany, number 1 in the Netherlands, number 3 in the UK and number 3 in Switzerland. The song was released in the United Kingdom on August 18, 2013 and features vocals from Will Heard. They originate form Salzburg, Austria and are associated with the Dance and Electronic music genres. The labels that they are signed to include Vertigo Records, Capitol Records and Universal Music. In their early career one of the members Tobias Rieser worked as a solo artist under the name Klangkarussell. Adrian Held, produced electronic music under the artist name I herald an anagram of his real name. In 2011, the two artists joined the duo "hero’s sound" together and produced their first songs together. To avoid confusion, who hides behind what name they gave soon known to now produce music together under the name Klangkarussell. When the pair met again in 2011 for the first time in over a decade (they'd been friends at school in Salzburg before being split up, apparently for their own good) Adrian was actually already in show business, starring for eight nights an opera at the prestigious Salzburg Festspiele. Tobias, meanwhile, was studying Sound and Audio Engineering after stints training in Mechatronics (electrical engineering), working in a post office and driving a bread delivery van. The pair received a call from Universal, and after wowing the major label with a private gig, they were signed up to create their debut album, due early next year. To date the song  has 22 million views  on youtube and over 10,000 comments in every language under the sun. There's a ten hour looped version, for those (and there are plenty) who just can't get enough, and the vocal version is currently riding high in charts across Europe.

In our video Sun Don't Shine by Klangkarussell, Dyers star theory cannot be related to the video. this is because our artist is not included. This is common in the dance genre with similar artists such as: Aphex Twin, David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia. These artist are not the main vocal point in each of their videos. However, because of this, our artist relates to one of Dyers key paradoxes; 'Star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer'. This allows the audience to understand the artist through their lyrics and not through the artist. This evokes the feeling that the artist wants the consumer to enjoy their music and not there life style like
other artist. This is an attempt for a deeper connection with the audience.

Although in both music videos by klangkarussell the artist is not represented, however some of Goodwin’s theory can be applied. In both the “Sun Don’t Shine” and “Alarm” by klangkrussell Goodwin’s theory can be applied. Firstly thought the use lyrics and visuals in the “Sun Don’t Shine”. “cos the sun don't shine without you,” this is accompanied by the picture with the sun shining on women. Showing the love he has and that they could not live without them. Klangkrussell use great jump shots between each shot showing the link between the beat of the music and visuals produced. This is of nature and to the women showing light all over them connecting to the lyrics.

It is clear the artist target audience is aimed at a young audience. This can be seen from the young women in both music videos. In addition there are many thing which the artist includes which a young audience can relate to such as party boats in the music video “ Alarm” this suggest the artist trying to interact with their target audience as they try to relate with experience they may have done or want to do.

Similarly to the deep house genre it is very common for deep house music video to be narrative based. Klangkrussell are no different both videos being very narrative based. This allows the artist to tell a story through there video, this can make it easier for the audience to understand what the song is really about. A narrative based music video also allows the target audience to enjoy the artist’s music and not the artist image.

The mise-en-scene used in both videos where very naturalistic. To accompany mise-en-scene of both music video relates to the lyrics. For example in the “Sun Dont Shine” all the women wear summer clothing and are surrounded but summer related objects, such as fruit, pick nicks, summer views, flowers and sun glasses. This helps the audience to cement what the song is about and what the lyrics are about.

As there is not a artist included in ether of the song, the camera doesn’t have a central focus point. Instead all characters are evenly shown throughout the narrative based music video. This means that there is a range of different shot used on all characters to show a number of different effects. Such as a long shot to show the women and the sun in the background, Creating link between visuals and lyrics. There are also close up to create the feeling that the artist cannot live without that person. The close up allows the audience to understand what the artist is saying.

My chosen artist focuses there music videos prominently on narrative based music videos. By researching in to this artist it will help my group also create a narrative based music video. In addition by looking at successful techniques this artist has shown it will help my group to follow in our chosen artist’s foot steps to also create a successful music video. Through researching into our chosen artist it has showed myself and my group what is necessary to create a successful music video.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of your chosen music artist. You have made a start in analysing one music video above, by focusing on the micro elements. You have also made a start in considering the hidden meanings and relationships, but this needs to be explored and discussed in more detail.

Also aim to include a summary, to explain how your research will assist you with planning your own music video.
