music videos are used in order to attract the specific target audience of the music and the genre that it belongs too. A music video is used to give an insight into the artist as well as the image that they want to portray. Through the use of researchers such as Goodwin and Dyer theory theses techniques can be made aware along with generic features to each genre. These have a massive impact on the audience such as building relationships ect ...

Drake (Over)
Dyers first point can be seen in the video from drake. A star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials. these images include the fire to show power and famed, Red also shows his hidden meaning which shows he has been constructed. The close up shot accompanied with the editing style of the flame getting bigger shows drake becoming a bigger star, with Drake centre frame emphasis dyers theory of being a star.
The star image is made up of a range of meanings which are attractive to the target audiences, dyers second point is also evident in Drakes. Women with minimal clothing would attract drakes male audience. This is intensified through the use of the close ups and high angle of women(rita ora) of the women.
Editing skills highlight dyers 1st paradox that "The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer" this can been seen where Drakes shadow gets bigger behind him suggesting he is extraordinary for the consumer however with the use of the smaller drake suggest that he is ordinary also.in addition the use of city life; cars and people walking fast in the back ground suggest that he is also extraordinary showing his life is fast passed, contrastingly the use of ordinary actions in other scenes create the feeling he is ordinary highlighting dyers paradox.
David Gruetta and Flo rida- "club cant handle me "
Dyers paradox one can be seen in this video where Flo rida is seen as extraordinary and ordinary. this can be seen through the use of Mese en scene where Flo rida appears in expensive cars (Lamborghini) the establishing shot presents this point, this is also emphasised though the use of iconography; a large gold chain and a large watch. this all helps to illustrate that he is extraordinary. This point can be also illustrated by the low angle shot of Flo rida of him above the crowed emphasising his power over everyone else in the club. Contrastingly he is seen as ordinary as he engages with the dancing with the crowed this can be seen with the use of an establishing shot.
Contrasting through the use of clothing Flo rida is seen in red where as all other people in the establishing shot are wearing dark colours the red stands out and makes him seem more important than all others. this point can be emphasised through the use of iconography (champagne bottles with sparklers) illustrates dyers point of Flo rida being extraordinary.
The dance genre is clearly evident in the song 'club cant handle me'. This can been seen through the use of Goodwins theory where the song evokes the feeling that the club cant handle the amount of people in the club. The genre can also be highlighted through the use of dancing relating visuals with song writing.
Katy Perry - pop
The pop genre can be highlighted through the use of cinematography. through the use of panning and establishing shots a fictional, fairy tale location can be created. The Alice in wonder land theme conforms to the pop genre, making it conventional to people who enjoy pop music. This fantasy image can be Illustrated through the use of a panning shot from Katy Perry room leading to a fictional world. And a medium shot of walls being pushed away.
The pop Genre can be highlighted through the use of editing as Katy Perry tries to attract her audience. Sparks and fireworks come from her chest highlighting the fairy tale image. This is also seen through the use of bright colourful lighting below the little girl illustrating the childish audience the singer is trying to attract.
Dyers paradox 1 The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer" . Katy Perry is seen as extraordinary where she takes on a tiger and scares it. This makes her extraordinary as she is fearless in the face of a tiger and scares the tiger. However she is seen as ordinary as she sleeps in a normal bed and is an ordinary woman.
This post demonstrates some understanding of music genres and how they appeal to an audience. You have identified three different music genres, but you have not included enough detailed examples from the videos above. Also you need to elaborate on the points that you have included on the micro elements throughout, to demonstrate further understanding, as your analysis is too basic.
ReplyDeleteFinally aim to include the summary points, to show your understanding of the music genres and how micro elements are used differently.
