Copyright

The Copyright Law
The Copyright law is a legal concept, enforced by most governments, giving the fabricator of work the exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. it gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights.

How does copyright law apply to music?
The music industry exists because of two types of copyrights. 1) the musical composition, and 2) the sound recording. A musical composition copyright protects the lyrics and melody in a song, and the sound recording copyright protects the audio recording.

Musical composition and Sound recording
If a musical composition is like the blueprint to build a house, then the sound recording would be the finished house. The musical composition gives us the blueprint for the song and the sound recording is the audio recording of an artist’s performance of the song. So, for example, if Beyonce and Barbra Streisand record their own versions of the same musical composition, as you can imagine, the resulting sound recordings would be very different.

How do music companies benefit from copyright law?
Copyrights can be sold and licensed. The practical result is that music publishers own musical compositions and record labels own sound recordings. So, when a songwriter is offered a “publishing deal,” they are signing an agreement to write musical compositions exclusively for that music publisher. And, when a singer is offered a “record deal,” they’re signing an agreement to exclusively make sound recordings for that record label. Sometimes the songwriter and singer are the same person, so it’s important to know which rights are involved in a contract, because the deals are very different.

Copyright is very important and is essential when creating our music video. The Copyright Law is designed to give the creator or publisher the ability to distribute a product including the right to sell and receive payment for their reproduction of the original product. Any violation of a copyright is known as infringement, something my group must avoid doing. This is used within the music industry to protect artists work and insure that the artist is gaining profits from their song therefore a benefit to the artist. It is clear, copyright protects the original artist and publisher from having their work copied directly and used for someone else own benefit.

Without at least applying for permission, we are unable to proceed planning, producing and publicly publishing our music video. If we did not, we would be at risk of having our video taken down from YouTube which would lead to legal action taken against us.

The artist we have chosen to use is Klangkarussell. We identified this two person group after conducting secondary research they belongs to Universal music, Vertigo records, Capitol records. After this step, we had to conduct further secondary research to gain a contact form the record label. The method of contact we decided to use was e-mail.

Diversity of Music Video

Each music video that is created is uniquely. This is due to the different characteristics of the artist that is being displayed within the video and leads to the type of video that is made to be altered, the genre must also be considered. For example a music video for Justin Bieber will illustrate a fun nature in music and include the genre characteristics of his music and attract his audience. Contrastingly artist like trey songs will have narrative based music videos to go with his slow paced style of songs. Themes and concepts are also altered throughout different videos and depend on whether the video is concept, narrative or performance based. Other factors such as the mise-en-scene of the video, the genre, cencorship and contrast contribute to a music video becoming unique.

Directors such as Chris Cunningham and Michael Gondry are know for creating diverse music videos which subvert the stereotypical genre characteristics:

Chris Cunningham:  is a British music video film director and video artist. He was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1970 and grew up in Lakenheath, Suffolk. He has had close ties to Warp Records since his first production for Autechre. Videos for Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" and "Windowlicker" are perhaps his best known. His video for Björk's "All Is Full of Love" won multiple awards, including an MTV music video award for Breakthrough Video and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video. It was also the first ever music video to win a Gold Pencil at the D&AD Awards.

The style that Madonna has gone for in this video is 'Gothic' which matches her song as it is about problems, love, depressions and emotions. Black is a shielding colour and represents a dark Austin, AmieeDiversity of music videos Why would an artist chose to create a diverse music video? To appeal to an audience a music video usually needs to contain a strong narrative, big celebrities and memorable settings. The type of clothing they wear or even the clothingSun 22:05. To appeal to an audience a music video usually needs to contain a strong narrative, big celebrities and memorable settings. The type of clothing they wear or even the clothing they don't wear needs to grab the audience's attention, the iconography in the video using has a part to play in the narrative and is usually linked to some sort of product for fans to purchase. Some artist miss behave or swear to gain viewers too. However Chris Cunningham and Michael Gondry go against these typical characteristic's and to create diverse and unique music videos instead.

In this music video 'Frozen' Madonna is not portrayed as the typical pop artist she is. The video is set in a desert and is breaking all the conventions of a pop video. This is to stand out from the crowd. The positive points about doing this is that Madonna is now being seen as different which is targeting a different type of fan base potentially increasing her fan base and the video is memorable which means that people are going to remember Madonna for doing this phase. Negatives can also become of this type of video as the target audience cannot relate to it. The current audience for Madonna will show no interest as it is not her typical type of music video this could mean that she would potentially loose a lot of fans also, in a way this video could make Madonna unpopular.

The structure of the video consists of both performance and Narrative, with performance being vastly heavier weighted. He presents the song and the artist as being Gothic and mysterious and it portrayed through the use of dark colours and drab weather. These dark colours are evident in the iconography such as the dark cloak that Madonna is wearing and even down the black birds that fly behind her when she is performing to the camera. The use of the Black birds also link to Goodwin's theory as the lyrics and the visuals link. When Madonna sings the lyrics 'birds' the group of back birds appear and sly behind her. Her frozen and pale complexion also reflects the title of the song 'Frozen' and is a theme that is continued throughout the entirety of the video through factors such as: the cold and windy weather and isolated location. The video however does not represent the artist in a way that the audience is used too as she is known for creating more up tempo pop/dance songs. The video for the song 'Frozen' however, although linking with the title of the song and the representation of Madonna within the video, goes against all of the conventions that you would expect to see in one of her music videos.

The video for the song 'Come to daddy' by the Aphex twins was also created by Cunningham and is another great example of how his directing allows a diverse music video to be created. The video has been created to more accurately fit the connotations of a short film as it is predominantly narrative based and follows the structure of having a beginning, middle and end. The music belongs to the genre of Dance/Techno however the video contradicts this by going against the generic conventions of people dancing etc that you would normally see in a video for this genre of music. Instead, Cunningham has produced a video that would not feel out of place in a thriller film. The only aspect that links the lyrics with the visuals is the editing where the beat and cuts etc follows the music.
The old woman at the beginning of the video is showing fear through her eyes to the audience to let them know that this video is a frightening piece of work. The dog barking allows the audience to know that there is paranormal activity present as the TV is not plugged in and yet turns on. The characters in this video really emphasis the horror theme as the audience will be frightened of their presents. There is a link between lyrics and visuals as it says 'Come to Daddy' the 'children' run.

Michael Gondry: Is an Academy-Award winning French filmmaker, whose work include being a commercial director, music video director, and a screenwriter. He is noted for his inventive visual style and manipulation of mise-en-scene.

The music video that we have studied that has been directed by Gondry is Kyle Minogue's 'Come into my world'. The video is set in Paris and is purely narrative and performance based. This is not conventional to the pop genre that the song belongs too as they usually contain more of a performance to compliment the upbeat type of song and lyrics as well as enticing the audience. This is one factor that has helped contribute to the video to become independent. The lyrics 'come into my world' introduce a new Kyle or aspect to the video which links the lyrics to the visuals and relates to Goodwins theory. The video also conforms to Dyers theory where he believes that the artist needs to appear accessible. This is shown through Gondry's decision to portray her as an ordinary person through the use of mise-en-scene and iconography. The setting for example shows an ordinary street in Paris and shows her walking around as if she is doing normal daily things. Her costume is also used in order to show her as being accessible as she is dressed in jeans and a top, just as a normal person would be when going about their daily activities.

Gondry's technique of incorporating a new edition to the video is replicated in the song 'The hardest button to button' by the White Stripes.
In this music video the guitar and drums are used to highlight the genre 'Alternative Rock' the artists wore leather and dark colours such as red and black with leather this also highlights the fact that they are rock artists as that is a stereo type. The visuals match the beat throughout the entire song this is due to the fact that at every beat a new instrument or piece of stage set up appears on screen. The video as a whole was 100% performance. This video is a lot like his Kyle Minoge video in the effect that everything on set is increasing in amount when the beat hits or chorus is repeated. make up and costume shown is dark, this is evidence that the music video has some 'rock' characteristics. The lyrics to visuals have a slight relation as it says 'box' and a man with a red box appears (right hand photo).

Analysis of Music Video Genre

Intro- how do music videos appeal to an audience?

music videos are used in order to attract the specific target audience of the music and the genre that it belongs too. A music video is used to give an insight into the artist as well as the image that they want to portray. Through the use of researchers such as Goodwin and Dyer theory theses techniques can be made aware along with generic features to each genre. These have a massive impact on the audience such as building relationships ect ...

Rap

Drake (Over)

Dyers first point can be seen in the video from drake. A star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials. these images include the fire to show power and famed, Red also shows his hidden meaning which shows he has been constructed. The close up shot accompanied with the editing style of the flame getting bigger shows drake becoming a bigger star, with Drake centre frame emphasis dyers theory of being a star.

The star image is made up of a range of meanings which are attractive to the target audiences, dyers second point is also evident in Drakes. Women with minimal clothing would attract drakes male audience. This is intensified through the use of the close ups and high angle of women(rita ora) of the women.

Editing skills highlight dyers 1st paradox that "The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer" this can been seen where Drakes shadow gets bigger behind him suggesting he is extraordinary for the consumer however with the use of the smaller drake suggest that he is ordinary also.in addition the use of city life; cars and people walking fast in the back ground suggest that he is also extraordinary showing his life is fast passed, contrastingly the use of ordinary actions in other scenes create the feeling he is ordinary highlighting dyers paradox.

David Gruetta and Flo rida- "club cant handle me "

Dyers paradox one can be seen in this video where Flo rida is seen as extraordinary and ordinary. this can be seen through the use of Mese en scene where Flo rida appears in  expensive cars  (Lamborghini) the establishing shot presents this point, this is also emphasised though the use of iconography; a large gold chain and a large watch. this all helps to illustrate that he is extraordinary. This point can be also illustrated by the low angle shot of Flo rida of him above the crowed emphasising his power over everyone else in the club. Contrastingly he is seen as ordinary as he engages with the dancing with the crowed this can be seen with the use of an establishing shot.

Contrasting through the use of clothing Flo rida is seen in red where as all other people in the establishing shot are wearing dark colours the red stands out and makes him seem more important than all others. this point can be emphasised through the use of iconography (champagne bottles with sparklers) illustrates dyers point of Flo rida being extraordinary.

The dance genre is clearly evident in the song 'club cant handle me'. This can been seen through the use of Goodwins theory where the song evokes the feeling that the club cant handle the amount of people in the club. The genre can also be highlighted through the use of dancing relating visuals with song writing.

Katy Perry - pop

The pop genre can be highlighted through the use of cinematography. through the use of panning and establishing shots a fictional, fairy tale location can be created. The Alice in wonder land theme conforms to the pop genre, making it conventional to people who enjoy pop music. This fantasy image can be Illustrated through the use of a panning shot from Katy Perry room leading to a fictional world. And a medium shot of walls being pushed away.

The pop Genre can be highlighted through the use of editing as Katy Perry tries to attract her audience. Sparks and fireworks come from her chest highlighting the fairy tale image. This is also seen through the use of bright colourful lighting below the little girl illustrating the childish audience the singer is trying to attract.

Dyers paradox 1 The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer" . Katy Perry is seen as extraordinary where she takes on a tiger and scares it. This makes her extraordinary as she is fearless in the face of a tiger and scares the tiger. However she is seen as ordinary as she sleeps in a normal bed and is an ordinary woman.

Research & Analysis of a Star Dyer's Theory

The term ‘star’ refers to the semi-mythological set of meanings constructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience. Irrespective of the medium, stars have some key features in common. A star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials (eg advertising, magazines etc as well as films [music]). Stars are also commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings.

Richard Dyer (Stars, BFI, 1981) “In these terms it can be argued that stars are representations of persons which reinforce, legitimate or occasionally alter the prevalent preconceptions of what it is to be a human being in this society.  There is a good deal at stake in such conceptions.  On the one hand, our society stresses what makes them like others in the social group/class/gender to which they belong.  This individualising stress involves a separation of the person's "self" from his/her social "roles", and hence poses the individual against society.  On the other hand society suggests that certain norms of behaviour are appropriate to given groups of people, which many people in such groups would now wish to contest (eg the struggles over representation of blacks, women and gays in recent years).  Stars are one of the ways in which conceptions of such persons are promulgated.”

  • ž        Youthfulness

  • ž       Rebellion

  • ž       Sexual Magnetism

  • ž       An anti-authoritarian attitude

  • ž       Originality

  • ž       Creativity/talent

  • ž       Aggression/anger

  • ž        A disregard for social values relating to drugs, sex and polite behaviour

  • ž       Conspicuous consumption, of sex, drugs and material goods

  • ž       Success against the odds

Stars depend upon a range of subsidiary media – magazines, TV, radio, the internet – in order to construct an image for themselves which can be marketed to their target audiences.

The star image is made up of a range of meanings which are attractive to the target audiences. This can be seen in Justin Bieber debut album My World which was released in November 2009.

Fundamentally, the star image is incoherent, that is incomplete and ‘open’.  Dyer says that this is because it is based upon two key paradoxes.

ž  Paradox 1-The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer

ž  Paradox 2-The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer

Research & Ideas for chosen songs

Group members:
  • Luke Thompson - Luke has gained experience with the recording equipment and is confident with operating the camera. He believes that he can achieve different camera angles and editing techniques in order to create a professional music video.
  • Max Heath - Max has expressed a range of different ideas to make our music video original as well as aquiring the abilities to use the editing software that we will use to produce our video
  • Will Stacey - Will has shown his ability to come up with original ideas and has expressed them passionately throughout our meetings
  • Rhiannon Andrews-West -
Meeting 1:
We collected all of our original ideas and evaluated each one to decide on an idea that we all prefered and that would produce the best music video to give us the best grade possible. We considered whether the ideas would stick to the genre coventions of the song that we had selected as well as whether is would successfully attract our chosen target audience. These were our options:
  • Song 1: Zinc - Only for tonight
- Narrative idea: We thought that we could take the idea of teenagers receiving their alevel  results as it would reflect the lyrics 'something on your mind' that is repeated in the chorus of the song. We thought that we could also show the teenager going out and being involved taking drugs and drinking alcohol in order to drown out the stress of their alevels. This would then go with the uptempo music of the song and create the correct atmosphere.

- Why we decided not to use it: We decided that the idea was not in depth enough and may therefore lead to the music video looking amateur. We also felt that our other ideas would be easier to carry out and would create a more successful video

Song 2: - Sun dont shine

- Narrative idea: The music video will start in a graveyard with a priest leading a funeral. This coincides with the lyrics on the first line 'ive walked through the valleys' which is a biblical term and therefore lends it to the story line. From here we are going to create flashbacks of the couple's (main characters) memories together to show an insight into the background of the people. This will be paired with the couple being shown at a house party that will be alternating with the flashbacks. This will help to create a faster pace to fit the fast beat of the House/Dance genre. We then will skip back in time to explain the use of the graveyard at the beginning by showing the couple leaving the house party (after having been drinking) and arguing in the car. The next scene is going to be a car crash which leaves the girl laying on the floor.

- Inspiration: Ellie Goulding & Calvin Harris - Need your love / Coldplay - The Scientist

- Why we decided to use it: We have chosen to use this narrative as we all agreed that the song choice fits with the ideas for the narrative better than any of the other songs that we had discussed using. We felt that the song spiralled a range of ideas and that this would lead us to create a more original and effective music video.

Further analysis:

Mise-en-scene:
- Iconography: Car
- Setting: House Party / Graveyard / Country Road
- Lighting: Light and Dark - Show the good times contradicting the bad - Lyrics link with the visuals

Cinematography:
We havent yet decided on the camera angles that we will use for each shot, however we know that we will need to use a range of them, including:
- High angle
- Low angle
- Close up
- Establishing shot
- Long shot
- Mid shot

Style of music video:
- Narrative - Drink, drug use, death, relationship

Target Audience:
- 16 to 25 - As this is the target audience of the song that we have chosen as it belongs to the House/Dance genre that is fairly new and therefore would attract a younger audience.

Editing:
- Fades - To show the change in time and to make a simple transaction between each scene

Codes and Conventions:
- Conforms to conventions - Dancing, Narrative

We planned our ideas under each heading of the factors that we need to ensure we cover within our music video:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meeting 2:

In meeting 2 we worked on gathering all of our ideas and ordering them so that we had a step by step plan of the narrative and what we will need to film in order to create our music video. This will allow us to make sense of all of our notes and ideas that we have already collected and organise them so that each member of the group is able to grasp and understand the concept.

In my individual research into our chosen genre of Dance/House I researched into other songs within the genre. The song 'I need your love' by Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris was a video that I took inspiration from as it has many dance characteristics. I thought that the flashbacks shown within the video is the same idea and creates the same effect that we want to achieve for our video. I presented this idea to the group and we all agreed that it would be an idea that we will take forward and use for our own music video. It also gave us an insight into the locations that we would need when filming.

We further discussed the ideas that we originally had for the music video and looked in more detail at each one and refined them. An idea that was fairly vague was which flashbacks we would use within the video to show the relationship that is presented within our video. We planned some further ideas which included changing the cause of the crash from drink driving to driving whilst on the phone. We decided that it would be more relevant to the narrative that we have chosen as it would link more to a relationship we are conveying. We thought that she could be looking at her phone while receiving a text (arguing with her boyfriend) which leads her to having a collision.

We then continued to discuss the different flashbacks that we will film for the video and the settings that we will need to visit. Our ideas included: Park (boats on a lake), Forest, Bed, and a suitable place to act the crash (High Beach or David Lloyd).

Lastly we looked closer at the lyrics of the song and discussed how we could link the visuals with the lyrics so that our video follows Goodwin's theory. We decided that the lyrics 'the sun don't shine, without you, without you' should be when the flashbacks of the crash are shown apposed to the happy flashbacks of their relationship. We also felt that darker lighting should be used in these sections to further reflect the lyrics.

Research into Goodwin's Theory

Key Features of Music Video

Goodwin’s music video analysis

Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’ (Routledge 1992)

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics

(e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band). From the image of the beatles it is clear to the audience that they are a rock band from their i

“got the law in my rear view mirror” from both the speech and the image it is clear for the audience to see the law is following the singer(jay-z)

Goodwin’s music video analysis

Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the distraction factory’ (Routledge 1992) states that:

Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics:

In a girl bands music video for example the audience would expect to see a dance routine of some kind. An example of this is ‘The Promise’ by Girls Aloud where all of the girls are dancing in sync with each other.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals:

The lyrics of the song are supported with the visuals of the music video to demonstrate the narrative or concept as well as trying to convey any literal or hidden meanings within the song. It can also however be used to completely contradict the lyrics to represent an alternative artist. An example of this is in ‘Heart Attack’ by Trey Songz where the lyrics tells the story of a broken relationship and references it to being like a heart attack and this is paired with images of the artist in hospital.

There is a relationship between music and visuals:

This link between the music and song is created using tempo and transitions. For example ‘Brokenhearted’ by Lawson employs an upbeat tempo using drums and guitars etc (convention of the indie/rock genre) that emphasises the pop conventions present within the song. The editing is quick and clean and the tempo matches the speed of the song as well as the positive message of moving on from an ex present within the video.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work:

Using this technique allows the audience to empathise with the artist and make the viewers believe that they are singing directly to them. It helps the audience to relate to the song and feel more engaged and therefore enabling them to build a relationship with the artist. An example of this is in Chris Browns video for ‘Don’t Judge Me’ where he is singing directly to the camera in sections of the video.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body:

The 'male gaze' is often used to attract a male audience by focusing on things that would appeal to the male audience and is often achieved by objectifying women. An example of this is in ‘No New Friends’ by DJ Khaled, Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. The camera focuses on the female body in little clothing and is objectifies the females, especially as the face is completely cut out of the low angle shot shown below.

There is often intertextual reference:

Most music videos reference other forms of media, such as television, radio and magazines etc. It can help the audience take further levels of meaning away from the video. Lady Gage in the video of ‘Paparazzi’ is shown to be reading a newspaper and is therefore a technique of intertextuality.

Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based:

Narrative based video: Uses moving image to tell a story throughout the video. It usually involves actors and is sometimes linked to the lyrical content of the song.

Performance based videos: Performance based videos often show the artist performing the song. This is often in a studio or live performance.

A performance based will allow the audience to image that they themselves are watching the artist at the concert and therefore sells the experience to the audience. It also advertises the artist concert and makes the audience want to purchase a ticket.

An example of a performance-based video is ‘Ego’ by Beyoncé where the entire video shows Beyoncé and two backing dancers performing a dance routine.

Concept based music videos: These types of videos usually follow a random concept and have no storyline. A concept video tends to be fairly unusual or utilise a particular editing or filming technique.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work
(a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking
(screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual reference
(to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

It is also worth considering:

7. Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based and how elements of each is used in it.

Research into Music Censorship

Do you think music videos should be censored?

Things to include...

  • ofcom, censorship law
  • detailed examples from music videos
  • specific artists from the music video
  • the eminem debate
  • provided both sides of argument- parents view for and against, record label, kiss radio station, eminem himself, MTV, 15 year old fan.

Censorship is the process whereby governing bodies can stop the publication of a product or text. Censorship of music can stop a song or video from being broadcasted on radio or television. Some institutions or artists choose to censor even if governing bodies do not. An example of censorship music, would be the 1940s radio station. George Formby's said "when im cleaning windows" this was banned from bbc radio due to the "smutty lyrics". The ostensibly offending lyrics were " the blushing bride she looks divine the bridegroom he is doing fine id rather have his job than mine when im cleaning windows" another example could be in 1956 where abc radio station refused to play billie holidays "love for sale" because the lyrics are about prostitution.

I do believe that music videos should be censored this is because i do not think certain music material is suitable for society to watch, mainly including young children who can interpret strong images differently and in many occasions think that it is acceptable to copy the artists because they are a role model.

Ofcom is an independent regulator and competition authority for the uk commissions industries. It takes into the consideration and importance in terms of freedom in the music industries. Music video are an artistic and creative concept, which sometimes  contain a deep messages that connects with the audience, however some people may find certain material offensive. Ofcom has duties with regards to all music videos to hold boundaries in terms of limiting certain material. These duties ensure that under-eighteens are protected and enforce generally accepted standards to provide protection for members of the public from the in clusion of offensive and/ or harmful material. for example the video "we found love" by Rihanna faced controversy with the music video due to the ccontent involved, some of the material included sex, drugs, anti social behaviour, gambling and violence. due to thix material the video was only shown after prime time, where it was less likely to be viewed by people under the age of eighteen. Ofcom  say we are aware of the issues faced by broadcasters in this area, including the desire and commercial need to broadcast new music videos as soon as possible after their release, and challenge of managing expectations of music labels and other stakeholders.

An artist that faced controversy throughout his whole career is Eminem; he believes that censorship is not necessary as he listened to the genre and music in terms of material when he was a child. Eminem said in an interview that he listened to artist like "Run DMC" and "NWA". he also stated that kids are smarter now days, throughout his whole interview he justifies why his material and others artists material should not be censored. "I used to sneak in R-rated movies", "I never raped anyone" and also reveals that he was picked on as a child. He also stated that " I didn't turn out that bad" Its the parents fault, He finally tries this whole interview off by stating that "its only music, its only entertainment ". however, if this material was broadcasted around the globe to various people from different walks of life and exposed to young children then this would surely be detrimental for society as kids would copy Eminem and all all of the thing he promotes.

A debate that was held with Eminem, a 15 year old fan, channel AKA, Eminem record label, a parent for censorship,, a parent against this , kiss radio and also MTV. Eminem stated " leave me to be what I want to be" which the parent against Eminem replied " you are encouraging kids to swear because your a role model". The response to this by the 15 year old fan was "music shouldn't be censored because kids will find out the words anyway" Music shouldn't be censored because kids will find out words anyway. Music channels had opposing views on the matter, with kiss and MTV supporting censorship , kiss said that has lots of swearing. MTV concurred with "because MTV is a universal channel Eminem's side argues that "we have got used to swearing over the generation side argued that we have got used to swearing over the generations. Channel AKA and the record label concluded, channel aka stated yes Eminem come under the crude category but that is what our channel promotes and we think he is a great artist for being real. This was followed by his record label that said we support Eminem's lyrics because we believe in the freedom of speech. although there is a good argument for both sides, children are going to be influenced by the artists no matter what other people say, they will find out some way to find any type of music and if this type of music is persistently drilled into a young  Childs mind, they will think it is a norm for people to speak like this.

It is clear that there is an argument for both sides, with one being that music should be what it is without censorship to the freedom of speech ect. The other being that artists like Eminem and Rihanna influence young children with their material and i think this is a vital point as i dont think it is acceptable for children to listen to the this type of music or see the material that artist such as Rihanna and Emimem promote.

  • Why do you think MTV is broken down into different channels (base, hits, dance, rocks, classic?
I believe that MTV is broken down into different channels because it wants to appeal to a large target audience and to do so they need to cover all genres of music therefore appealing to those who like rock, dance, classic etc. By doing this MTV is not only appealing to the typical ‘teenage/young adult’ market and are extending their viewers/listeners. It is an easy way to earn viewers whereas, a music channel like ‘the box’ will only appeal to teenagers and those who are interested in the hits and futuristic music.
  • Why do you music channels are important in appealing to a target audience?
Music channels are important because they allow the audience to get a better insight into their artists song by viewing the video. Videos are allowing the audience to gain the artists true perspective and views of their own song and allow the audience to interact with them on a much deeper level as appose to just listening to the song on their Ipod or the radio.
  • Why do you think there are a variety of music channels?
I think there is a variety simple because not everyone likes the same music, by having different music channels it allows the audience to listen to different types of genres, it allows them to listen to something they wouldn’t usually listen to and it is an easy way to create diversity between artists creating a more popular fan base. There is too much music for there to be only one channel. There needs to be multiple channels in order for audiences to be able to switch between songs and genres to their benefit.
  • What have you learnt from analysing music channels and how will it help you with your own production?
I have learnt that in order to appeal to a large target audience my music needs to be clean in order for it to appear on the majority of music channels. I have learnt that music channels are a target for listeners that want the ‘stories within the song’. This will help me with my own production as I know what I need to include in certain genres in order to appeal to my target audience.
